Seven new ministers took oath in Karnataka on Wednesday, as Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa expanded his 17-month-old cabinet. Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers at a ceremony held at the Glass House of Raj Bhavan.
The new ministers who were sworn-in are MLAs Umesh Katti (Hukkeri), S. Angara (Sullia), Murugesh Nirani (Bilgi) and Arvind Limbavali (Mahadevapura), and MLCs R. Shankar, M.T.B. Nagaraj and C.P. Yogeshwar.
Yediyurappa, his cabinet colleagues, BJP leaders and office bearers including general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Arun Singh, state unit president Nalin Kumar Kateel, senior officials of the state government, family members and supporters of new ministers, among others were present at the event.
This was the third expansion of the cabinet since Yediyurappa assumed charge in July 2019 after the collapse of the Congress-JDS government in the wake of revolt by 17 MLAs of the coalition partners. It’s a mix of old guard and new entrants from Congress and JDS who are making into the cabinet.
Keeping up the promise, Congress-JD(S) rebels-turned-BJP MLCs R. Shankar and M.T.B. Nagaraj, who helped the saffron party come to power, were inducted by Yediyurappa. Both of them had served as ministers in the coalition government.
Another MLC Yogeshwar, who is said to have played a key role by managing Congress-JD(S) rebel MLAs, during the political turmoil in the state in 2019, was also inducted into the ministry. He too was a minister in the previous BJP government.
Among the BJP old guards making it to the cabinet include Katti, Angara, Nirani and Limbavali. While Katti (eight time MLA), Nirani and Limbavali (state BJP vice president) have been ministers in the previous BJP government, for Angara (six times MLA) this will be his first stint as the minister.
While announcing that seven new minister’s induction, Yediyurappa has indicated that Excise Minister H. Nagesh will be dropped from the ministry, thereby keeping one berth vacant in the state cabinet, which can have a maximum strength of 34 members.
Meanwhile, over a dozen BJP leaders including senior leader H. Vishwanath and Basanagouda Patil Yatnal have lashed out at Yediyurappa for overlooking them in the state cabinet expansion and considering only those who “blackmailed” him.
Attacking the CM during a media address in Vijayapura, Basanagouda R. Patil (Yatnal) said, “Yediyurappa only considered and made them minister who blackmailed him with a CD and paid huge money to him. Two are been made ministers today and one person has been made political secretary after all 3 blackmailed over a CD.” Leaders other than Basanagouda held press meets in their respective cities to register their protest. H Vishwanath expressed his displeasure in Mysuru.
Other dissenting leaders include MP Kumaraswamy from Mudigere, Satish Reddy from Bommanahalli, Shivanagowda Nayak from Devadurga, BJP MLA Thippareddy from Chitradurga, and Yediyurappa’s close aid MP Renukacharya MLA from Honnali.
Other leaders include MLA Sunil Kumar from Karkala, Rajugowda from Surapura and Mahesh Kumathalli from Athani, and Muniratna from Rajarajeshwari Nagar constituency are openly attacking Yeddyurappa over cabinet expansion berth.
Basanagouda further attacked the party leadership, saying that “Loyalty, caste, seniority, region wasn’t considered, the only quality which was considered was CD and blackmail. Yediyurappa completely ignored party loyal workers like us, who blackmailed him, made CD and who planned to bring down his government has got cabinet birth and made ministers today.”
He alleged that Yediyurappa brought CP Yogeshwar into the cabinet “who cheated” several people in Megacity land mafia, real estate scam and dropped single Dalit MLA Nagesh from the cabinet without any reason. “This doesn’t suit Yediyurappa who’s known for keeping his words,” Basanagouda said.

In DJB vandalism case Raghav Chadha approaches Magistrate’s Court for monitoring of investigation
New Delhi [India], January 24 (ANI): In the face of “brazen acts” of “lawlessness” executed by vandalising the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) headquarters at Varunalaya, Jhandewala, the Vice-Chairperson of Delhi Jal Board has moved an application under Section 156(3) of CrPC praying for Court’s intervention and monitoring of investigation carried out by the police officials.
According to an official release, in the DJB vandalism case, DJB Vice-Chairperson Raghav Chadha has approached Magistrate’s Court for monitoring of investigation by filing an application under Section 156(3) against Delhi BJP Chief Adesh Gupta, Yogendra Chandoliya, another BJP leader Ravi Tanwar, Upadhyaksh, Karol Bagh BJP Unit, Vikas Tanwar and other unidentified persons owing to the ineffectual investigation and lodging FIR under trivial sections of Epidemic Act without naming the aforesaid BJP leaders, thus orders for effective investigation and monitoring of the same have been prayed in the application filed by Raghav Chadha.
The application for monitoring of investigation states that “upon the outrageous and unprecedentedly horrendous turn of events, wherein by resorting to brazen acts of vandalism and hooliganism orchestrated by Adesh Gupta, president, Delhi BJP Unit, Yogendra Chandoliya, another BJP leader, Ravi Tanwar, Upadhyaksh, Karol Bagh BJP unit, Vikas Tanwar, more than 200-250 BJP workers in the prosecution of their common object, unleashed series of grave and serious cognizable offences in broad daylight at Delhi Jal Board Headquarter.”
“The incident of violence was aggravated owing to the conspicuous inaction on the part of Delhi Police who nonchalantly stood as mute spectators while the riotous mob created havoc and illegally trespassed the Delhi Jal Board Headquarters and woefully ravaged the public property of the Delhi Jal Board, which is an instrumentality of State and obstructed the officials in discharge of their official duties with absolute impunity, again followed by the abysmal inaction of the concerned police officials to bring the palpably identifiable offenders to book till date. Thus, by way of the application under S. 156(3), inter-alia, a court-monitored timely investigation is sought in furtherance of the right to a fair and impartial investigation,” the application further read. Illegal mining rampant in state, impossible without Karnataka CM’s support: Siddaramaiah
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], January 24 (ANI): Illegal mining is rampant in Karnataka, flouting all the rules of the Mines and Geology Department and it is impossible to carry out illegal mining without the support of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, said former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday.
In a thread of tweets, Yediyurappa slammed Karnataka Chief Minister saying that the government should take strict action against all those who are involved in illegal mining.
“Illegal mining is rampant in the State flouting all the rules of Mines and Geology Department. It is impossible to carry out illegal mining without the support of Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa,” Siddaramaiah tweeted.
“Karnataka CM has said that illegal mining can be made legal by submitting an application form. Does this mean illegal mining done till now is not an offence? Can anything illegal be made legal with just an application? Is this a responsible statement made by BS Yediyurappa?” Siddaramaiah added.
BS Yediyurappa has assumed that legalising illegal mining is like regularising houses and land, said Siddaramaiah adding that he would not have made such an irresponsible statement if he had some knowledge about the law.
“The government should take strict action against all those who are involved in illegal mining, irrespective of party affiliation. Karnataka CM should not be influenced by anyone in taking action,” Siddaramaiah tweeted.
“MLC Ayanur Manjunath has claimed that there are more than 100 illegal mining sites in Shivamogga. Who is responsible for illegal mining on such a large scale in the home district of Karnataka CM only?” he added.
“It seems KS Eshwarappa had instructed officers in a KDP meeting to turn blind eye to illegal mining activities. Will Eshwarappa take responsibility for the blast that killed many innocent people? Or will the officers take the responsibility?” Siddaramaiah said in another tweet.
Illegal mining is a serious issue and it has already taken the lives of many innocent people, said Siddaramaiah.
“I strongly demand an enquiry by a sitting High Court judge,” Siddaramaiah added. (ANI)
