In a recent controversy, filmmaker Karan Johar faced rumors regarding his dramatic weight loss, with speculation suggesting the use of Ozempic, a medication for diabetes known to aid in weight reduction. These rumors gained traction after Maheep Kapoor criticized the use of Ozempic on the show Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, noting the drug’s shortages affecting diabetic patients. In response, Johar clarified on Instagram that his transformation was due to “healthy eating and a balanced lifestyle.”

This controversy has fueled a broader conversation about the ethical implications of using medical treatments like Ozempic for cosmetic purposes rather than their intended medical use.

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a prescription drug primarily prescribed to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Administered as a weekly injection, it aids in insulin regulation and has been shown to significantly reduce weight as a side effect. Although Ozempic is unavailable in India, its global popularity has surged as people turn to it for weight management, leading to shortages that have impacted diabetic patients.

While the active ingredient in Ozempic, semaglutide, is also used in the drug Wegovy, the latter is specifically FDA-approved for weight loss. Both drugs are manufactured by Novo Nordisk, but Wegovy contains a higher dose of semaglutide, intended for weight management.

How Ozempic Works

Ozempic belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 agonists, which mimic hormones released during digestion, stimulating insulin production. By slowing gastric emptying, Ozempic helps users feel fuller longer, thereby reducing appetite and encouraging weight loss.

Potential Side Effects and Warnings

Like any medication, Ozempic carries risks. Known side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort, dehydration, and even severe conditions like thyroid tumors in animal studies. It may also exacerbate kidney problems or cause allergic reactions in rare cases. Experts advise consulting healthcare providers for proper management of side effects and regular monitoring, especially for those with a history of endocrine disorders.

This incident has highlighted the importance of using prescription medications only as directed, with health experts urging the public to seek informed advice from physicians before turning to such treatments.
