Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan visited the victims of the Hooch tragedy at Kallakurichi Medical College. The death toll from the incident in Tamil Nadu has now reached 56, as reported by the district administration on Sunday.

According to the District Collectorate in Kallakurichi, a total of 216 patients were hospitalized across four hospitals in Tamil Nadu due to consumption of illicit liquor. At Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) in Pondicherry, 17 patients are alive and three have died. At Vilupuram Medical College, four patients are alive and four have died. The highest number of fatalities occurred at Kallakurichi Medical College, where 31 people have died and 108 remain alive.

At Salem Medical College, 30 patients are alive, while 18 have died. “There are 160 people who were admitted to the hospitals mentioned above and 55 people are dead,” according to official data.

152 male patients have survived the incident, while 51 have tragically passed away. Meanwhile, BJP workers in Tamil Nadu protested the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy on Saturday.

On the professional front, Kamal Haasan’s upcoming projects include ‘Indian 2’. Directed by S. Shankar, the film features an ensemble cast including Siddharth, SJ Suryah, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Kalidas Jayaram, Gulshan Grover, Nedumudi Venu, among others. Produced by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies, ‘Indian 2’ showcases cinematography by Ravi Varman and Rathnavelu, with editing by A. Sreekar Prasad. The film is a sequel to the 1996 hit ‘Indian’, starring Kamal Haasan as Veeraraghavan Senapathy, reuniting him with director S. Shankar.

Additionally, Kamal Haasan is involved in ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, directed by Nag Ashwin. This post-apocalyptic film draws inspiration from Hindu scriptures and is set in the year 2898 AD. The trailer suggests Ashwin’s futuristic reinterpretation of the Mahabharata with a dystopian twist. Kamal Haasan stars alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani in the film.
