In a rare display of humor in the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan shared a playful exchange that had the entire House laughing. The moment began when Bachchan asked Dhankhar if he had taken a lunch break. Dhankhar responded with a witty comment about being serious on lighter notes, which set the tone for their light-hearted banter.
This amusing episode contrasted sharply with recent tensions in the Rajya Sabha. Just three days prior, Bachchan had taken issue with Deputy Chairman Harivansh referring to her as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.” She had stated that women should be recognized by their own identities, not solely by their husband’s name.

During the exchange, Jaya Bachchan joked, “I, Jaya Amitabh Bachchan, want to ask…” prompting Chairman Dhankhar to laugh and sparking a wave of chuckles throughout the House.
Bachchan continued by teasing Dhankhar about his frequent mentions of Jairam’s name, quipping that he must be unable to digest his food without mentioning it. Dhankhar replied, “Sir, did you get a lunch break today? You didn’t, right? That’s why you keep mentioning Jairam’s name again and again. Because you can’t digest your food without remembering him or mentioning his name…” He added, “I want to say one thing on a lighter note… I didn’t have lunch during the recess… but after that, I had lunch with Jairam.”
Dhankhar also expressed his admiration for Jaya Bachchan and her husband Amitabh, saying, “Today, I want to say something to the House… this is the first time… I’m a fan of yours as well as Amitabh Bachchan’s.”
Bachchan folded her hands in respect and asked, “Why is this the first time?”
Dhankhar responded, “Because until today, I never met a couple.”
With a smile, Bachchan replied, “Yes, that’s why my name is like that… thank you.”
