In the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Perth, Jasprit Bumrah made history. Indian pacer, captaining in the absence of Rohit Sharma, took four wickets on Day 1 and wrapped up his five-wicket haul with Alex Carey on the first ball of Day 2. The wicketkeeper-batter, Carey, was caught behind by Rishabh Pant, marking Pant’s 99th dismissal in the World Test Championship.

However, with the wicket of Carey, Bumrah earned his first five-wicket haul under his captaincy and also grabbed the record of becoming the first Indian fast bowler to reach 50 wickets in one edition of the World Test Championship (WTC). The achievements before Bumrah have been Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

Most wickets in one WTC edition for India:

-Ravichandran Ashwin 2019-21 – 71

-Ravichandran Ashwin 2023-25 – 62

– Ravichandran Ashwin (2021-23) – 61

– Ravindra Jadeja (2021-23) – 51

– Jasprit Bumrah (2023-25) – 50*

Bumrah’s performance in this Test also gets him top of the 2024 wicket-takers’ list with 61 wickets in 18 matches, ahead of Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga, who has 60 wickets.

– Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka) – 60

– Adam Zampa (India) – 50

– Josh Hazlewood (Australia) – 48

– Alzarri Joseph (West Indies) – 48

With 46 wickets in 2024, Bumrah shares the number one spot for the most Test wickets of the year with Ashwin. Jadeja follows with 44 wickets in 10 games.
