In a continuing escalation of tensions, Ukraine announced on Sunday that it had successfully destroyed 22 Russian drones in the southern Odesa region. Simultaneously, Russia confirmed that it had struck the Danube port of Reni, which lies on the border with NATO member Romania.
The conflict in the region has taken a severe toll on Ukraine’s port infrastructure, particularly in the Odesa region. This recent exchange of hostilities follows Russia’s decision to exit an agreement that had previously ensured safe passage for ships carrying grain from Ukrainian ports.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that on the night of September 3, 2023, “the Russian occupiers launched several waves of attacks by ‘Shahed-136/131’ UAVs from the south and southeast.” In total, 25 of these Iranian-made attack drones were launched, and a joint effort by the Ukrainian Air Force, in cooperation with other components of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, successfully destroyed 22 of them.
However, Ukrainian prosecutors stated that several drones managed to breach their defenses and hit the Danube area, causing at least two people to be wounded in the process.
The Russian military claimed that it had targeted “fuel storage facilities” in Reni, a strategic location situated across the Danube river from Romania, a member of both NATO and the European Union. Romania has previously condemned Russian attacks on Ukraine’s Danube ports of Reni and Ismail. Since the collapse of a United Nations-brokered deal in July that had allowed for the shipment of grain from Black Sea ports, Russia has significantly escalated its attacks on Ukraine’s southern Odesa and Mykolaiv regions.
Destruction of Russian Drones: Ukraine reported the successful destruction of 22 Russian drones in the southern Odesa region. These drones were identified as ‘Shahed-136/131’ UAVs, which are Iranian-made attack drones.
Russian Attack on Danube Port: Simultaneously, Russia confirmed that it had struck the Danube port of Reni, located on the border with NATO member Romania. This attack is a part of the broader conflict and has implications for regional security.
Impact on Ukraine’s Port Infrastructure: The conflict has severely impacted Ukraine’s port infrastructure, particularly in the Odesa region. This includes damage to ports vital for Ukraine’s agricultural exports.
Civilian Ship Defiance: Despite the Russian blockade, a civilian cargo ship from Ukraine successfully reached Istanbul via the Black Sea. This defiance illustrates Ukraine’s determination to maintain its critical grain exports.
Romania’s Condemnation: Romania, a NATO and EU member, has condemned Russian attacks on Ukraine’s Danube ports of Reni and Ismail, indicating regional concerns.
