Hokkaido, Japan’s beautiful north island, is famous for its snowy views and untamed countryside, which are still attracting travelers from around the world. But recently, it’s not only the views that have been creating a buzz on the internet, a small bird has stolen the hearts of everyone around the world.

Say hello to the Shima Enaga, affectionately referred to as the ‘Japanese snow fairy’. With its cottony white plumage and small size, this cute bird has captured the hearts of internet users. The Shima Enaga is a member of the long-tailed bushtit family and is among Japan’s smallest birds, standing only 14 cm or approximately 5.5 inches tall.

Because of their spherical shape and snowy-white plumage, these birds have created a commotion on the internet. “Why does Japan have all the cute animals?” quipped one user. “In Australia, it’s all metal and in Japan, all cute,” another user added. A third just typed, “Oh my god. So fluffy little bird.”

Describing the Shima Enaga’s charm, one described it as, “It’s so tiny and adorable like a fairy, so we all adore it so much. But since they are wild birds, we cannot take care of them. If you encounter them, you can obtain a lot of happiness from them. They are cheerful birds Japan is proud of.” Others earnestly reiterated, “Save the bird no matter what,” and, “Even the birds in Japan appear Japanese.”

If you’re lucking out, wanting to catch a glimpse of this delightful creature, then one of the best places to attempt it is at the Bird-Watching Cafe close to Chitose City in Hokkaido. Australian-born Aaron Kemp owns and operates the café, which is set up for birdwatchers and photographers. Although the shy birds never get near people, people can sit around with coffee, ice cream, or sweet treats waiting, all in hopes of getting a glimpse of the snow fairy.

Although having been difficult to capture due to their small size and reserved nature, the Shima Enaga still spreads joy among people fortunate enough to view them.
