Operation ASAN: AI, Drones Boost Army Ops in J-K’s Akhnoor

The Indian Army recently employed unmanned vehicles and artificial intelligence (AI) to conduct counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Akhnoor sector, showcasing advanced strategies in response to mounting regional threats. During a media briefing, Major General Sameer Shrivastava, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 10 Infantry Division, highlighted that the use of unmanned vehicles and AI enabled a swift and effective operation. AI and unmanned systems were instrumental in identifying militant positions and streamlining the operation, leading to successful outcomes against heavily armed militants believed to have significant intent for violence in the region.

Tragically, the operation resulted in the loss of a four-year-old sniffer dog named Phantom, who was killed in action after sustaining fatal injuries while shielding troops. Phantom was reportedly at the forefront, and his sacrifice allowed Indian forces to protect their personnel in a hazardous environment. This incident has underscored the dedication of canine units in counter-terrorism missions, where they serve on the front lines of potentially life-threatening situations.

The anti-terrorism operation in Akhnoor was part of the larger counter-offensive, Operation Asan, which the Indian Army launched in response to recent terrorist activities, including an attack on an Army convoy in the Battal area. This particular operation saw security forces, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, sealing off the area and initiating a search after militants fired on an Army ambulance. In the ensuing encounter, three terrorists were neutralized. According to Maj Gen Shrivastava, the terrorists’ gear and weaponry suggested that they had plans for a significant assault, with previous posts from terrorist groups indicating a coordinated threat.

As per intelligence reports, around 50 to 60 terrorists are reportedly positioned at launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) with intentions to infiltrate Jammu. The Army’s use of AI, unmanned ground vehicles, and BMP vehicles was essential in navigating the challenging terrain of Akhnoor, which is characterized by steep gradients and dense forests. BMP vehicles were crucial for reaching and neutralizing the entrenched militants, marking a significant tactical advantage in the rugged geography.

The army’s rapid deployment and use of advanced AI have been credited with mitigating possible large-scale attacks on civilians. The AI-driven systems provided real-time insights, enhancing decision-making in the heat of combat, and allowing the Army to act upon real-time intelligence reports quickly. This technological integration reflects India’s increasing use of AI in military operations, which is expected to transform both counter-terrorism efforts and general defense strategy in the coming years.
