Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday said that Chandigarh belongs to Punjab and always will be. Along with this, he said that Punjab’s “next big fight” with Haryana will be over the water of rivers.

Sidhu’s remarks came after Haryana top brass of leaders had demanded the completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal to get the state’s river water share from Punjab. Haryana leaders have also demanded the transfer of 400 Hindi-speaking villages to Haryana.

Days after the Punjab Assembly passed a resolution to immediately transfer Chandigarh to the AAP-ruled Punjab, the Haryana government on Tuesday convened a special session of the Legislative Assembly here. The Union Territory of Chandigarh is the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.

Sidhu tweeted in Hindi, “The 27 villages of Punjab were, is and will remain in Chandigarh, Punjab, built from the ruins of the desolate…. Kahin pe nigahain kahin pe nishana….” He indicated this by saying that the real target of Haryana is not Chandigarh but the water of rivers.

He said, “Chandigarh is just an excuse, the target is the water of the river of Punjab. Be careful the next big fight will be for the river waters of Punjab.

Sidhu, who recently lost the election from the Amritsar East assembly seat, also tagged AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in his tweet.
