Costa Rican citizen Addis Miller recently gained widespread attention for his unique approach to weight loss—a 21-day water fasting. Documenting his journey on social media, Miller shared significant details of his fasting experience, highlighting a dramatic weight loss of 13.1 kilograms (28 pounds) and a reduction in body fat by 6%.

“Earlier this year, I embarked on a 21-day water fast in Costa Rica. This experience was truly life-changing for me, and I am excited to share some of the precious moments from my journey,” Miller wrote on his YouTube and Instagram channels.

However, despite its apparent benefits, experts caution against the risks associated with water fasting when undertaken without proper medical supervision. Extended periods without food can lead to nutritional deficiencies, including vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes. This can result in weakness, dizziness, or more severe health complications. Moreover, excessive water intake during fasting can disrupt electrolyte balance, leading to dehydration.

“Prolonged fasting can also slow down metabolism as the body conserves energy,” noted experts. This adjustment may potentially lead to rebound weight gain once the fasting period concludes. Individuals with pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or eating disorders are particularly advised to avoid water fast or engage in it only under strict medical guidance.

To mitigate these risks, experts suggest safer alternatives like intermittent fasting or medically supervised fasting programs. These methods offer health benefits without the extreme measures and potential health hazards associated with prolonged water fasting.

As Addis Miller’s journey continues to spark curiosity and discussions on social media, the debate over the safety and efficacy of water fasting remains ongoing among health professionals and enthusiasts alike.
