The Kolkata Knight Riders announced on Wednesday that English batter Jason Roy Jason Roy towill play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this season.

Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the League due to a lower back injury, so Roy was brought in

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is also not playing for the Shahrukh Khan-owned team this season.

“From his base price of INR 1.5 crore, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have signed England’s Jason Roy for INR 2.8 crore for the TATA IPL 2023,” IPL said in a statement today.

Roy last appeared in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2021 season, after appearing in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

He appeared in five games in 2021, scoring 150 runs, including a half-century. The 32-year-old has appeared in 64 Twenty20 Internationals for England, scoring 1522 runs at a strike rate of 137.61 with eight fifties.

KKR lost their first match against PBKS by 7 runs (DLS method), but Roy’s presence in that game could have changed the dynamic. KKR got off to a bad start in their pursuit of 192.

Pacer Arshdeep Singh stunned Kolkata’s batting lineup with a double blow. He dismissed Mandeep Singh (2) and Anukul Roy (4) for just two runs, reducing KKR to 17/2 in two overs. Roy’s job would be to keep KKR from falling into such situations.
