Apple has introduced the entire range of iPhone for the year 2020. iPhone 12 is the series and there seems to be something for everyone. You get to choose from 12, 12pro, 12pro max and 12mini. Watch out for this space as I would review all of them for you here. Today the pick is the iPhone 12 and the reason is that I consider it to be a great pick for this festive season, if you want to buy or gift at a starting price of Rs 79,990.

DESIGN

Design is where the iPhone 12 is winning first. Apple seems to have gone back to the drawing board, metaphorically. As you look at the device the first reaction is it looks like the iPhone 4 and 5. The iPhone 12 uses a metal frame with flat edges. Coupled with the flat screen and the flat layer on the back. Making the curves of the phone stand out. The iPhone 12 is 7.4mm thick and weighs just 162 gm. It is a phone which can be well used with a single hand.

The phone feels small and the dimensions are well crafted out. Never did I feel once that I am holding a small device. The aluminium on the phone gives it the ‘premiumness’ you expect from an apple device. It is a compact device.

The rear of the device houses a dual-camera setup. The camera unit has a different finish which adds an element to the design. You get a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a uniformed bezel around.

The brightness and colour of the display is phenomenal. Your instant attention will go to the display if you compare it to the iPhone 11. There is a mark difference. Of course, you get an OLED screen in comparison.

It is IP68-certified for protection against water and dust. On the front there is a new ceramic shield on the screen. Apple claims it is 4X more durable and should survive falls and bumps better. The iPhone 12 comes in five colours: Red blue and black, the white and the green which I have as a review unit.

PERFORMANCE

The iPhone 12 runs on the new and the fastest chipset as claimed by Apple—the A14 Bionic. The processor is surely well tuned. It is an extremely fast device. The iOS is smooth and runs seamlessly. Gamers will enjoy the device a lot. Maybe the screen size might not be of their choice, but the processor works wonders. Multi-tasking has been very breezy, and the Face ID is very quick.

The phone supports 5G but in India we need to wait for that. Another enjoyable part of the iphone12 is the speakers. While you are playing games or viewing content you will thoroughly enjoy the speakers on this device. They are loud and clear.

BATTERY

Battery is always a crucial part of an iPhone. You do get a wire in the box but if you don’t have an adapter from a previous device then you will have to shed Rs 1,900. The phone also supports wireless charging MagSafe chargers. On a single time, charge with basic multitasking the phone worked well for over 12 hours. With content viewing the battery life was a bit lower. All in all you would need to charge your phone once a day. It supports 15W fast charging.

CAMERA

The iPhone 12 has two rear cameras. The main camera using a 12-megapixel sensor, and a wider F1.6 lens, is great in good light. Turn on the Night Mode, and the iPhone 12 clicks wonders. The ultra-wide-angle camera with 12-megapixel sensor is also great, especially in natural light. The 12-megapixel front camera is much improved and the accuracy and detailing on the front pictures are worth a watch. The lens does not miss a single blemish on your face. The Night Mode is supported on all cameras and that helps get some great pictures throughout the day. The photographs in low light will leave you pleasantly surprised they are clean and show great detailing. The video recording is also way above power and can be a great pick from video bloggers.

CONCLUSION

As I had begun the review claiming it to be a great device for the festive season, I guess most of you would agree with me on that. It is a sleek and comfortable device well designed with a capable chipset. It works fast and the display is a delight. The camera unit has all the capabilities you would be looking for except the telephoto lens. The only downside for me is the battery and the non-availability of a charger in the box. Other than that, there is really nothing to complain about the device. You get a wide range of colours to choose from at a starting price of Rs 79,990.
