INDIA’S NEW COVID-19 CASES HAVE PEAKED, SHOWS CAMBRIDGE TRACKER

Active coronavirus cases dip for second day in a row, 18 states show decline, says Union Health Ministry.

The number of new coronavirus infections in India has peaked, according to a new tracker developed by researchers at the Cambridge Judge Business School and the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, as per a Bloomberg report. The report about the new tracker emerged even as India’s total active caseload of Covid-19 dipped to 37,04,099 on Wednesday and now comprises 15.87% of the country’s total positive cases, the Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday. Thus, in over two months, India reported the first reduction in active Covid-19 cases on Monday, and followed the trend on Tuesday. Given that India is still reporting more than 3 lakh Covid-19 cases a day, the volume of recoveries is remarkable.

The Union Health Ministry data shows that as many as 18 states are showing signs of a decline in the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic. These states include the worst-hit ones including Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Bihar. However, the new worry is that about 90 per cent of districts in India are showing a Covid-19 positivity rate of over 10 per cent.

“There is substantial variation among states and Union territories in their trajectories, with cases continuing to increase over the next two weeks in areas such as Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Tripura,” the researchers wrote, as per the Bloomberg report.

Meanwhile, according to the Union Health Ministry, a net decline of 11,122 cases has been recorded in the active caseload in the last 24 hours. This is the second consecutive day of decline in the active cases. India’s cumulative recoveries stand at 1,93,82,642 on Wednesday. The National Recovery Rate is 83.04 per cent, said the ministry. It stated that 3,55,338 recoveries were registered in the last 24 hours.

As per the ministry, new recoveries outshine new daily Covid-19 cases for the second consecutive day. Ten states, including Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Haryana, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, account for 71.58 percent of the new recoveries.

The ministry said that the Union government is expeditiously delivering global aid to states/UTs under the “whole of Government” approach, to augment their efforts in Covid management. It further informed that 9,200 oxygen concentrators, 5,243 oxygen cylinders, 19 oxygen generation plants, 5,913 ventilators/Bi PAP and 3.44 lakh Remdesivir vials received as part of global aid to India have been delivered/ dispatched to the states and UTs to strengthen and supplement their Covid response, so far. The Union government is ensuring a streamlined and fast delivery of the global aid to the states and UTs through faster custom clearances, and use of air and road, said the ministry.

It further mentioned that the cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has exceeded 17.52 crore on Wednesday as the phase-3 of the nationwide vaccination drive expands further.

The Ministry informed that 3,48,421 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours. Ten states including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana reported 71.22 per cent of the new cases in the country in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 40,956 followed by Karnataka with 39,510 and Kerala with 37,290 new cases. It further informed that the National Mortality Rate currently stands at 1.09 per cent. 4,205 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

According to the ministry, ten states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Haryana and West Bengal, account for 73.17 per cent of the new deaths in the country.
