India’s Covid death toll crosses 50,000 mark

After recording 941 fresh fatalities on Monday, India’s total Covid-19 death toll has now crossed the 50,000 mark. The country also witnessed a single-day spike of 57,981 infections and the total tally of coronavirus cases now stands at 26,47,663. More than 19,19,842 people have also recovered, pushing the recovery rate to 72.51 percent. India has so far tested more than 3 crore people and around 50,921 people have lost their lives so far due to the deadly virus in the country. Meanwhile, the case fatality rate also declined to 1.92 percent. Now 6,76,900 cases of coronavirus infection are active in the country.

Looking at the individual tallies of the states, India’s worst affected state Maharashtra reported a total of 8,493 new coronavirus cases and 228 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of positive cases in the state rose to 6,04,358 including 4,28,514 recovered patients and 20,265 deaths. Active cases now stand at 1,55,268. Meanwhile, Delhi also reported 787 new Covid-19 cases, 740 recoveries and 18 deaths in the last 24 hours. Total number of cases now stands at 1,53,367 including 1,38,301 discharged cases. There are currently 10,852 active cases in the city. The national capital has recorded 4,214 deaths so far.

Indian southern states continued to contribute maximum surge in coronavirus infections. Tamil Nadu recorded 5,890 fresh Covid-19 cases pushing the tally to 3,43,945, while 120 deaths propelled the death count here to 5,886. As many as 5,667 patients were discharged from various hospitals and total 2,83,937 people have recovered. There are 54,122 active cases in the state. Meanwhile, Kerala reported its highest single-day surge of 1,725 Covid-19 cases, taking the tally to 46,140 cases while 13 deaths took the death toll to 169. Karnataka reported 6,317 new cases and 115 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases has increased to 2,33,283 including 80,643 active cases. So far 1,48,562 patients have been discharged and 4,062 deaths have been recorded in the state.

India’s most populous state Uttar Pradesh recorded a total of 4,186 new coronavirus cases and 69 deaths in the last 24 hours. Total active cases in the state stood at 50,893 and the death toll reached 2515. The tally includes 1,04,808 discharged cases. Haryana reported twelve more deaths due to Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. The state also recorded its highest single-day spike of 887 cases, taking the tally of total infections to 48,040. With this, total fatalities in the state rose to 550. Active cases in the state currently stand at 6,880 while 40,610 people have been discharged after recovery.

Himachal Pradesh recorded 13 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 4,170. There are 1,313 active cases in the state while 2,797 coronavirus patients have recovered from the infection so far. Eighteen patients have died due to Covid-19 and 40 have migrated out of the state. Jammu and Kashmir recorded 422 new coronavirus cases, taking the total number of infected persons to 28,892, while six Covid-19 patients died during the last 24 hours in the Union Territory. The death count here has climbed to 548 of which 507 were from the Valley and 41 from the Jammu region.
