President Droupadi Murmu declared on Wednesday that the government’s bill to grant women 33% of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures, which was introduced the previous day, will be the greatest transformative revolution in our times for gender equity. After opening the biennial meeting of the national human rights institutions (NHRIs) of Asia and the Pacific, which was held at the Vigyan Bhawan here, Murmu was speaking to a crowd. Tuesday saw the introduction of the first law in the new Parliament building, the women’s reservation bill.
“We have ensured a minimum of 33 per cent reservation for women in local bodies’ election… In a more pleasant coincidence, a proposal to provide a similar reservation for women in state assemblies and national Parliament is taking shape now. It will be the most transformative revolution in our times for gender justice,” the President said.
Between September 20 and 21, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Asia Pacific Forum (APF) will host the event.
Doo-Hwan Song, head of the APF, Amina Bouayach, secretary of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), and Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra, chair of the NHRC, were also present.
The 28th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the APF will take place on Wednesday to debate matters of importance to all of the member nations. The NHRC previously stated that the conference is expected to draw more than 1,300 people from both India and outside.
Along with representatives from the Union and state governments, state human rights commissions, special rapporteurs, monitors, and various institutions involved in the protection and promotion of human rights in the nation, the conference is attended by the heads, members, and senior officials of the NHRIs of various countries.
