Palitana, located in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district, stands out as the world’s first city to enforce a total ban on non-vegetarian food, including meat and eggs. This groundbreaking decision came about after a significant protest by Jain monks, highlighted by a 2014 hunger strike involving nearly 200 monks. Their demands led to the closure of around 250 butcher shops. In response to the Jain community’s principles of non-violence, the city government enacted the ban, which also includes penalties for those who violate it.

Known as the “City of Temples,” Palitana boasts over 800 exquisitely carved Jain temples that have been integral to its identity for over 900 years.
