Why The World’s Only City Of Vegetarians Banned Non-Vegetarian Food

Palitana, located in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district, stands out as the world’s first city to enforce a total ban on non-vegetarian food, including meat and eggs. This groundbreaking decision came about after a significant protest by Jain monks, highlighted by a 2014 hunger strike involving nearly 200 monks. Their demands led to the closure of around 250 butcher shops. In response to the Jain community’s principles of non-violence, the city government enacted the ban, which also includes penalties for those who violate it.

Known as the “City of Temples,” Palitana boasts over 800 exquisitely carved Jain temples that have been integral to its identity for over 900 years. Reflecting Jain dietary practices, the city’s cuisine is purely vegetarian, with many restaurants offering both traditional Jain and non-Jain vegetarian options. Jain cuisine excludes root vegetables to prevent harm to microorganisms, and some Jains also avoid dairy products.

Local favorites include Gujarati dishes such as Dhokla, Khandvi, and Khichdi. Unique offerings like Rotlo, a millet flatbread, and Dal Dhokli, a flavorful lentil soup with dumplings, are popular among residents and visitors alike. Palitana’s spiritual significance and scenic beauty, particularly the panoramic views from Shatrunjaya Hill after climbing over 3,500 steps, make it a key pilgrimage site and tourist destination.

Palitana is accessible from Bhavnagar, with the nearest airport and major railway station situated there.
