Wayanad Landslides: Death Toll Rises To 167, Rescue Efforts Continue

Wayanad Landslides News LIVE Updates: Rescue operations in Wayanad continue this morning following the devastating landslides that claimed over 158 lives and injured about 167 people. The efforts involve units from the army, NDRF, and other emergency services as they search for victims and possible survivors under collapsed roofs and debris from destroyed homes.

The 122 Infantry Battalion of the Territorial Army, stationed at a local school in Meppadi, began their second day of rescue operations.

In addition, several army companies from Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru have been deployed to Calicut by road and air, bringing disaster relief specialists, medical teams, ambulances, and other essential equipment.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the mountain district of Wayanad, which has been severely impacted by landslides triggered by incessant rains, as well as all northern districts of Kerala. The red alert indicates that extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours, is expected in these regions.

In addition to Wayanad, the red alert covers eight districts. An orange alert, which signifies very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm, was issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam districts on Tuesday. A yellow alert, indicating heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm, is also in place for several regions.

These warnings come as rescue and relief operations continue in the landslide-affected areas.
