Remembering Veer Savarkar: His Legacy and Contributions
Born in Nashik on May 28, 1883, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly known as Veer Savarkar, became a significant figure in India’s freedom struggle. He was a lawyer, writer, politician, and revolutionary who originally coined the term ‘Hindutva’ to describe a political and cultural identity based on Hindu values.
Savarkar started his activism as a student and intensified his activities while studying law in the UK, where he was a part of revolutionary groups such as India House and the Free India Society. The British government banned his work, The Indian War of Independence, which became a symbol of rebellion during the 1857 revolt.
Imprisoned in the notorious Cellular Jail in the Andaman Islands, Savarkar endured inhumane conditions but remained resolute in his mission. He later led the Hindu Mahasabha and continued advocating social reforms and national unity, particularly against untouchability.
Savarkar’s legacy is a source of respect for the ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as well as Hindu nationalists, while secular political communities continue to dispute his ideology. In any case, his impact on contemporary Indian politics and the freedom struggle remains and continues to resonate throughout the country.
