Uttarakhand: Five Trekkers Dead In Uttarkashi, 22 Still Missing

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams successfully saved 11 trekkers, who are now safely at the Sahastradhara helipad in Dehradun.  The rescue team also retrieved five bodies from the scene of the incident.

Additionally, two other trekkers remain at the nearby base camp in the Bhatwadi block of Uttarkashi district.

The search and rescue mission is being conducted urgently to locate and save the remaining four individuals from the group of twenty-two trekkers who are trapped in this incident. The group lost their path and became stranded due to severe weather conditions while trekking towards Sahastra Tal in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand.

The authorities have started both ground and aerial rescue missions to rescue the remaining hikers who are stuck on the Sahastra Tal trekking route.

During the afternoon of that day, adverse weather conditions in the Himalayan region posed challenges for the helicopter rescue team in carrying out their operation. Consequently, District Magistrate Dr. Meharban Singh Bisht has directed the rescue efforts to expedite their operations to rescue the remaining trekkers.

Arpan Yaduvanshi, the Superintendent of Police of Uttarkashi, has said, “On June 4, the SDRF team received the information about the missing trekkers in Bhatwadi block of the district. The team of a total of 22 trekking members went missing due to the bad weather.”

He added, “Upon receiving the information, the administration acted upon it promptly and a rescue team of 10 members comprising officials from the SDRF, Forest Department, and Police officials immediately rushed for the rescue operation. In the team of 22 trekkers, 18 belonged to Karnataka, one hailed from Maharashtra and three of them were local guides. A joint rescue operation is underway to save the remaining trekkers.”

Earlier, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team successfully rescued six trekkers who were trapped on the challenging Sahastra Tal trek route. Following their rescue, they were promptly admitted to the hospital for thorough medical check-ups and provided with essential first-aid treatments.
