A run-of-the-mill argument between a married couple in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district took the form of a shocking standoff when the wife reportedly threatened to kill her husband or frame him in a dowry case. The police have initiated an inquiry based on the complaint filed by the woman’s husband.
The couple, married in June 2022, allegedly faced problems from the outset. According to the husband’s statement, his wife persistently avoided any physical intimacy, causing him emotional distress. She also frequently returned to her parents’ home in Sant Kabir Nagar district, and in November 2024, left again this time without notifying him.

Pregnancy Shocks Husband
It was not until February 2025 that the husband called his wife and asked her to return. In April, things turned dramatic when the woman felt a pain in her abdomen and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors there confirmed that she was 14 weeks pregnant. The husband, shocked, consulted several medical experts, all of whom reported the same outcome.
When questioned, the woman reportedly conceded the pregnancy to be the result of an affair with ‘someone else’. She then reportedly threatened her husband that if he did not accept her and the child, she would either ‘kill him or falsely implicate him in a dowry case’.
Maharajganj authorities have confirmed that a formal case has been filed and legal action is under way. The police are probing the allegations and the situation behind the threats.

How Social Media Responded
The incident generated outrage on the internet, with many users calling for changes to current legislation. One user posted, “Now is the time for gender equality law where else can innocent people turn? Scrap gender-biased laws and bring in gender-neutral legislation to empower all citizens, regardless of gender.”
Others noted the potential legal requirements the husband could be required to fulfill despite the circumstances. “The husband should just accept his fate, reconcile with his wife, and raise the child—because legally, he may have no other choice in India,” another user said.
A third user provided a scathing analogy: “But the court will tell you it’s yours. Such as if someone else is driving your car & they get in an accident, then you are responsible because you are the LEGAL owner of the car…like here too you are LEGAL HUSBAND so it’s yours.”

This is close on the heels of yet another shocking report from Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district, in which a woman threatened to kill her husband when he protested against her extramarital affair. She reportedly brought up the case of the notoriety involving the Meerut murder case and threatened her husband that he could suffer the same horrific fate.
