A 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district allegedly took her own life after being barred from taking an exam due to unpaid school fees of ₹800.

Denied Entry Over Pending Dues

The Class 9 student had gone to school to appear for a test when she was allegedly humiliated and stopped from taking the exam by school officials. According to a police complaint filed by her mother, the school manager, Santosh Kumar Yadav, officer Deepak Saroj, Principal Rajkumar Yadav, and others publicly shamed the girl over the pending amount.

“School manager Santosh Kumar Yadav, officer Deepak Saroj and Principal Rajkumar Yadav and others humiliated her publicly and did not let her take the exam. Upset over their behaviour, my daughter came back home and went to her room. I was out to work in the fields. When I came back home, I saw my daughter had died by suicide,” her mother stated.

Police Register FIR, Investigation Underway

Following the tragic incident, local authorities have registered an FIR under Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with the abetment of suicide involving a child or a person of unsound mind. Additional Superintendent of Police Durgesh Singh confirmed that an investigation is in progress.

Demand for Justice

Mohammed Arif, a lawyer and local panchayat member, called for strict action against those responsible for pushing the girl to such an extreme step.

“If students are humiliated in the name of education, the administration must step in. The guilty must be punished so that those running a business of education are punished and children get a good education,” he said.

Previous Similar Incidents

The tragedy has drawn attention to another similar case in Jethwara, also in Pratapgarh district. In that instance, a Class 12 student, Shivam Singh, died by suicide after he was denied his admit card.

The girl’s mother revealed that their family had already paid ₹1,500 in dues, with only ₹800 remaining. “I was working in the field. When I returned, everyone was running around. That’s when I found out,” she said.

Authorities are continuing their probe to determine accountability and ensure justice for the victim’s family.
