Police in Tilhar town of Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district recovered the body of a 32-year-old woman stuffed inside a suitcase on Sunday, following a distress call from the family. Authorities said the woman’s husband claimed she died by suicide, and that he concealed the body out of fear of legal consequences.
The deceased has been identified as Savita, wife of Ashok Kumar. According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Dwivedi, police were alerted after Savita’s brother-in-law informed them of an alleged suicide. However, when a team arrived at the residence, they discovered the woman’s body hidden inside a large suitcase.
Husband Says Wife Hanged Herself
Ashok Kumar told the police that his wife had died by suicide, allegedly hanging herself with a scarf. He claimed he panicked after discovering her body and decided to conceal it inside a suitcase to avoid police action. “Fearing action against him, he removed the body and placed it inside the suitcase,” police quoted the husband as saying.
Children Back Father’s Claim
According to officials, the couple’s two children also supported their father’s version of events. SP Dwivedi said, “This version of events was corroborated by the couple’s two children.”
Despite this, the act of hiding the body has raised serious concerns. “The act of concealing the body in a suitcase raised suspicions,” added SP Dwivedi.
Police Initiate Probe, Await Autopsy Report
A preliminary examination of the body showed marks around the neck, but there were no signs of decomposition, suggesting the death occurred recently. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Police have launched a detailed investigation and assured strict legal action if foul play is established. “Legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty,” said SP Dwivedi.
Authorities are now awaiting the autopsy report to clarify the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
