CCTV footage from a market close to Pahalgam in Kashmir’s Baisaran valley recorded chaotic scenes as tourists, including children and elderly people, ran for their lives an hour after terrorists opened fire in one of the deadliest attacks on the civilian population in the region.

The time stamp on the video coincides with the time of the April 22 attack that killed 26 civilians. The footage depicts people fleeing and cars racing through the market area downhill from the destination that is so popular with tourists. Some of the cars, according to sources, were ferrying the wounded to safety.

Sources confirmed that the tourists who could be seen fleeing in the footage had come down from Baisaran’s upper ground via a route that had not been cut off by the attackers. The spontaneous outburst of panic captured on CCTV indicated the shock and urgency with which individuals attempted to flee the gunshots. The assailants, said to have cross-border affiliations, attacked civilians before vanishing into the forests surrounding the area. The attack location was filmed in a number of videos taken by survivors.

Videos Depict Horror from Survivor’s Point of View

Among the horrific evidence, one tourist recording a zipline adventure accidentally caught a spine-tingling moment—a selfie where individuals were collapsing after being shot upon running away from the direction of the incoming terrorists.

India Reacts with Steps Against Pakistan

Following the cold-blooded assault, India proclaimed a number of diplomatic and strategic steps against Pakistan, blaming it for the suspected cross-border nexus of the terrorists. India withdrew from the Indus Waters Treaty and issued a blanket ban on all Pakistani visas. These actions came after successive Indian claims of Pakistan‘s prolonged patronage for terrorist incursions perpetuating anarchy and mayhem in Jammu and Kashmir.

Wider Crackdown and International Alert Issued

Security forces have initiated a region-wide crackdown, searching several places in Jammu and Kashmir to identify those who were involved in the attack. The authorities also took their efforts abroad. A SriLankan Airlines flight was detained at Colombo airport on Saturday as there were fears that suspects associated with the Pahalgam attack could be on board. The plane was cleared for takeoff after a thorough security screening.

India is still on high alert, with heightened counter-terror operations in progress and diplomatic pressure building on Pakistan for its supposed role.
