The state administration has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts on December 2, 2025. The closure comes as severe rainfall and waterlogging continue due to Cyclone Ditwah, affecting large parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring areas.

Several universities have also postponed semester exams, citing safety concerns for students and staff.  Officials said the decision follows warnings from the regional meteorological office and ongoing deteriorating weather conditions across the region.

Chennai and several nearby districts will stay shut on Tuesday as persistent rain from Cyclone Ditwah continues to affect Tamil Nadu. Authorities reviewed the latest weather updates and decided to close schools and colleges to avoid risks for students. The city has been receiving steady rain since Monday morning, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruptions.

Schools and colleges will remain shut on Tuesday in multiple districts, including:

  • Chennai
  • Tiruvallur
  • Chengalpattu
  • Kancheepuram (some reports include this district too)

Additionally, higher-education institutes such as Anna University and Madras University have postponed their semester exams that were scheduled for Tuesday. Authorities said they will announce new exam dates later, after assessing the cyclone’s progress.

Cyclone Ditwah Latest Update

Cyclone Ditwah now weakened into a deep depression continues to hover close to the coast, dumping heavy rains over Tamil Nadu and adjoining regions.

Meteorological updates say the system remains near the coastline, and further rainfall and waterlogging is expected to persist. Residents have been warned to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official advisories.

Authorities have deployed rescue and relief teams ahead of potential flooding and flooding-related emergencies.

Why Authorities Decided to Shut Schools?

The decision comes in the wake of continuous rainfall, waterlogging and forecasts of further heavy rain. Roads in many areas are already flooded, which poses risks to student commuting.

Officials said the closures were a “precautionary measure” to protect students, staff, and their families from hazardous weather and potential flooding. With exams on the schedule, the safety of examinees and exam staff was also a factor.

The move reflects the seriousness of the situation: even as Ditwah weakens, its effects — heavy rain, storm-driven winds — continue to disrupt normal life.

What Measures Should Be Taken?

  • Stay tuned to official announcements from school/college authorities. Examine exam-reschedule notices carefully.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel — roads are waterlogged and may be hazardous.
  • Keep abreast of weather advisories from the local meteorological office.
  • Follow instructions from local authorities and avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas.

What This Means for Chennai & Surrounding Districts

The situation shows how a weakening cyclone can still wreak havoc through heavy rains and flooding. School closures, exam postponements, and disrupted daily routines are a sign that resilience and caution are needed even after the main storm passes.

For now, safety is the priority. As the rains continue, residents will need to stay alert — and officials will have to monitor flood risks and infrastructure safety carefully.
