Thunderstorm Alert: Kolkata and South Bengal to Face Heavy Rain

Regional Meteorological Centre of Kolkata has already issued a weather warning for West Bengal, predicting heavy thunderstorm and gusty winds till April 15. A cyclonic circulation over Sikkim and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal is responsible for these weather phenomena. Troughs running from Madhya Pradesh to Bangladesh and Assam to the Bay of Bengal are resulting in strong winds and heavy showers.

Thunderstorms in South Bengal, Including Kolkata

South Bengal is placed under a particular thunderstorm alert, which covers Kolkata. The intensity of the storm will be the strongest in West Medinipur, Jhargram, East Medinipur, and Purulia, where windy conditions may touch 40-50 km/h. Thunderstorms would prevail in these districts, and the rains may persist even after Monday, reducing the temperature a little. The effect of storms, however, is expected to ease gradually.

Continued Rain in North Bengal

Isolated rain and thunderstorms will continue in North Bengal’s higher hilly areas until Wednesday. Darjeeling has been put on heavy rain alert. Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and nearby areas will also see thunderstorm with wind speeds of 30-40 km/h. In Malda and North and South Dinajpur districts, winds may rise to 50-60 km/h. The intensity of the storm in North Bengal will decrease after Monday.

Kolkata Weather Forecast

Kolkata witnessed its highest temperature at 34.2°C on Saturday, which was 1.5°C less than the normal. The minimum temperature of 26.4°C was 0.8°C higher than normal. Humidity was between 53% and 88%. There will be a partly cloudy sky in the city over the next 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 34°C and 25°C, respectively.
