Actor Kamal Haasan’s controversial comments regarding the Kannada language have caused the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) to halt the release of the movie ‘Thug Life’ in Karnataka. Kamal Haasan’s claim that Kannada derives from Tamil sparked widespread indignation across the state.
The KFCC has responded by taking a strong stance and requiring the actor to issue a formal apology before permitting the release of the movie. Political figures, pro-Kannada organizations, and the Kannada film industry have all harshly criticized the remark, calling it offensive and untrue.
KFCC Remains Opposed to Film Release
N.M. Narasimhulu, the president of the KFCC,stated that, “Kamal Haasan is insisting, ‘I have not done anything wrong, so I will not apologise.’ But if he does not apologise, there is no question of allowing the film to be released.”
Widespread Backlash Outside the Film Industry
The controversy has sparked criticism from a wide range of groups. According to Narasimhulu, “Not just people from the industry, but also local political leaders and pro-Kannada organisations have condemned his statement.” Karnataka movie distributors and cinema owners have already made the decision to boycott the release.
Narasimhulu also added that “Even if he apologises, we won’t immediately allow its release.” June 3 Deadline for Response
The KFCC has given Kamal Haasan and the movie’s distributors a deadline of Tuesday, June 3, to respond, but they have not yet made a definitive decision. Kamal Haasan, currently in Dubai, plans to arrive in Chennai by 11 am that day. Distributors have asked for an official response by noon.
