Tamil Nadu DyCM Reviews Lake Banks, Canals In Chennai As Heavy Rains Lash City

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin conducted an inspection of the Narayanapuram lake banks and the Ambedkar Road canals on Monday, following heavy rainfall across the state.

“As heavy rains are falling in various parts of Chennai, as per the directions of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin, we conducted a survey on the banks of Narayanapuram lake between Pallikaranai and Kovilambakkam,” the Deputy CM posted on X.

During the visit, Deputy CM Stalin also discussed the region’s preparedness to handle the heavy rainfall with local officials. “We examined the manner in which the banks of the Narayanapuram lake have been strengthened, and inquired from the officials about the manner in which the channels leading to the rainwater lake have been dug, the nature of the banks, etc.,” he added in his post.

Additionally, the Deputy CM, along with other officials, inspected the canal on Ambedkar Road, which channels excess water from Kilikattalai Lake to Narayanapuram Lake. He also took the time to meet with local residents, listening to their concerns and instructing officials to take necessary action to address them.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had convened a review meeting with senior officials to discuss the situation and issued necessary instructions to manage the rainfall’s impact. Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam also held a separate meeting with relevant officials to ensure adequate preparations were in place.

In anticipation of more rain, residents around Velachery took preventive measures by parking their cars on the Velachery flyover to avoid potential damage to their vehicles. Meanwhile, an advisory has been issued to fishermen, warning them not to venture into the sea. The Chief Minister has also instructed authorities to allow employees of IT companies in affected districts to work from home from October 15 to 18, according to an official release.
