Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of plotting the brutal murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, broke down in front of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) after being confronted with incriminating evidence, according to sources. She ultimately confessed to planning her husband’s killing with the help of her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha.
Initial claim of robbery collapses under evidence
Sonam had initially claimed she was the victim of a robbery, maintaining this version during the 27-hour journey from Ghazipur to Shillong and even after questioning began. However, once the SIT presented damning evidence—including CCTV footage of her meeting with the killers, call records, and personal items like a raincoat and blood-stained shirt found at the crime scene—Sonam reportedly broke down and confessed.
Shillong SP Vivek stated, “We have solid evidence against Sonam that proves her involvement in the murder.”
Lover and contract killers also confessed
Raj Kushwaha, Sonam’s alleged lover, had confessed the day before. On June 10, Kushwaha and the three contract killers he allegedly hired—Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi—admitted their roles in the crime. According to ACP Poonam Chand Yadav, “The accused not only admitted to carrying out the murder but also revealed that Raja’s wife, Sonam, was present at the scene and watched her husband die.”
Marriage, murder and betrayal
Sonam and Raja married on May 11 in Indore and later travelled to Meghalaya. On May 23, they checked out of a homestay in Nongriat village. Ten days later, Raja’s body was discovered in a 200-foot-deep gorge around 20 km away. Investigations revealed that the murder had been executed by killers allegedly hired by Kushwaha, with Sonam actively coordinating the plan.
Family disowns Sonam after her confession
Sonam’s brother Govind has publicly condemned her, confirming his belief in her guilt based on the evidence. “According to the evidence found so far, I am 100 per cent sure that she has committed this murder. All the accused are related to Raj Kushwaha. We have broken our ties with Sonam Raghuvanshi. I apologise to Raja’s family,” he said.
In a shocking revelation, Govind added that Raja used to call Sonam ‘didi’ and she had been tying rakhi to him for the past three years. “Had we known about their relationship, we would never have allowed this to happen,” he said.
