How Did This Cafe Come Into Being?
Originally built during the British era, this old police station has now been reimagined into a heritage café. Once used as a detention centre, the site now invites visitors to dine in cozy rooms that were once jail cells. The man behind the idea is Vivek Syiem, the current Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills. He first thought of revamping the building when he served as Deputy SP and wanted to preserve its historical value while giving it a fresh purpose.
The project is a collaboration between the Meghalaya Police and local entrepreneur Nafi Nongrum, who led the restoration. The café maintains the original stone walls, old wooden floors, and vintage fireplaces, allowing guests to enjoy their meals amid authentic colonial architectural features. The transformation is impressive, and yet the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
