Seven-Year-Old Mumbai Boy Dies in Open Pit Dug Up by RTO

A seven-year-old boy died after falling into an open pit near the State Transport (ST) bus depot in Mumbai’s Kurla area, police reported on Sunday. The incident occurred around 4:15 PM on Saturday. The pit had been excavated by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for track construction purposes. Following the incident, authorities registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, at the Nehru Nagar police station. Investigations are ongoing to determine further details.

This tragedy is not an isolated incident in Mumbai. On November 8, Sunday evening, an 18-month-old boy, Krishna Omprakash Gupta, fell into an open drain near Maurya Hall on Gaondevi Road in Bhandup (West). The child reportedly slipped through a small opening in a partially covered drain section. He was rushed to MT Agrawal Hospital, where he was declared “brought dead.”

In another recent incident, a seven-year-old boy, Amit Munnalal Jaiswal, died after falling into an open drain in Dharavi’s Rajiv Gandhi Colony. The boy was playing near the drain when he slipped and fell into it. Despite rescue efforts, he was found dead.

In June, a two-year-old boy fell from a 15th-floor fire brigade access duct in an SRA tower in Kurla, leading to his death. The child wandered out of the flat when his father accidentally left the door open. Residents accused the builder of negligence, stating that the building had been under construction for years.

On November 30, a six-year-old boy named Ujjawal Singh died after falling into a water-filled pit outside an MSRTC bus depot in Kurla East. The tragedy sparked demands for accountability against the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation and the contractor responsible for the pit.

These incidents highlight the pressing need for stringent safety measures and vigilant supervision at construction sites and public areas to prevent such heartbreaking accidents in the future.
