The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) demolished a rain basera (night shelter) near Sarai Kale Khan on Wednesday.
A lawyer rushed to file a plea earlier in the morning in the Supreme Court for the urgent hearing of the petition to stay the demolition.
The petition was mentioned before a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who asked the petitioner to mention his plea before another bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Dipankar Datta.
The night shelter was demolished as soon as advocate Prashant Bhushan arrived before the bench of justices Hrishikesh Roy and Dipankar Datta.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan told the court that the night shelter was bulldozed without making any alternative arrangements for the people who were living in it. He went on to say that the concerned authorities issued the demolition order last night.
The court said that nothing can be done because the shelter is no more, but assured it would work for the rehabilitation of the occupants. The court will hear the matter on February 22, when the shelters case is scheduled to be heard.
One of the residents of the shelter said that it was not correct to bulldoze the shelter because it was in good condition.
