Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra has been appointed as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), effective Wednesday. The government confirmed the appointment in an official statement, indicating that Mr. Malhotra will serve a term of three years.
Mr. Malhotra is a 1990-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Rajasthan cadre. He holds a degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and has earned a Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University in the United States.
With a career spanning over 33 years, Mr. Malhotra has gained extensive experience across various sectors, including power, finance, taxation, information technology, and mining. Prior to his role as Revenue Secretary, he served as Secretary in the Department of Financial Services.
According to information available on the Department of Revenue’s website, Mr. Malhotra has significant expertise in finance and taxation at both the state and central government levels. He has been instrumental in formulating tax policies for both direct and indirect taxes, showcasing his deep understanding of the financial landscape in India.
