The machinery has been set in motion to seize the assets of the dismissed Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Rajjit, who stands accused in a significant drug smuggling case. The decision comes in the wake of the Mohali District Court’s approval to confiscate the properties of the accused. This move was instigated by the Vigilance Bureau, soon after the court declared Rajjit a fugitive.
AIG Rajjit, charged in the drug trafficking case, has been evading arrest since last April. In light of a confidential report highlighting his involvement in the multi-crore drug smuggling racket in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann terminated Rajjit Singh’s services. Ever since the exposure, Rajjit has been on the run.
A Backdrop to the Investigation
The Punjab and Haryana High Court established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) back in 2017, with the mandate to delve deep into the drug trafficking network in the state. Upon completion, three of the reports generated by this team were unveiled by the High Court and forwarded to the Punjab Government for consequent action. One such report led to punitive measures against AIG Rajjit Singh.
The Domino Effect
The investigation’s spotlight landed on Rajjit Singh post the arrest of then-Inspector Inderjit Singh, who was caught red-handed by the Special Task Force (STF) under ADGP Harpreet Singh Sidhu, possessing six kilograms of heroin. With one revelation following another, Rajjit’s involvement became evident.
As part of the ongoing inquiry, the accused, Inderjit Singh, has provided crucial information pointing to Rajjit’s role in the illicit activities. The Special Task Force is currently examining these revelations. Concurrently, the Vigilance Department has slapped a case against Rajjit, pinpointing his disproportionate assets.
