Rajasthan: MBBS Student Undergoes Dialysis After Ragging, 7 Booked

A first-year MBBS student at a government medical college in Dungarpur, Rajasthan, had to undergo dialysis after being compelled by seniors to perform over 300 push-ups in extreme heat. It resulted in severe damage to his kidney function.

Seven second-year students have been suspended after an FIR was lodged against them.

Although the ragging occurred on May 15, the college administration acted against the accused students on Tuesday following communication from the National Medical Commission (NMC). The victim had lodged a complaint with NCM’s anti-ragging cell.

The College Principal Balamuruganvelu S said, “The email by NMC was forwarded to the college’s anti-ragging committee on June 22, which investigated the matter and confirmed the incident had taken place. Following SC guidelines and based on the recommendation of the anti-ragging committee, we filed an FIR against seven accused students.”

According to the allegation, the accused led the first-year student away from the college campus to a hilly location about one-and-a-half kilometers away, where they instructed him to perform push-ups under intense heat, leading to severe dehydration. As a result, he had to be hospitalized in Ahmedabad for seven days.

Based on the principal’s complaint, the accused have been booked under multiple IPC sections, including 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 149 (offense committed in prosecution of common object), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 352 (assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation).
