A Dalit woman who was allegedly raped and set on fire in Rajasthan’s Barmer district on Thursday died of burn injuries on Saturday at Jaipur’s Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, according to authorities.
The incident occurred on Thursday in an area under the jurisdiction of the Pachpadra police station in the Barmer district. Soon after the occurrence, there was a political controversy in Rajasthan as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader slammed the Ashok Gehlot government.
Rajendra Rathod, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, criticised the incident, calling it a disgrace on the face of the Ashok Gehlot government in Rajasthan.
“The relatives of the victim have demanded Rs 1 crore in compensation and a government job.” The families’ demands should also be met, and the family should receive justice,” he added.
The police have noted that a case has been recorded under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
