Heavy showers pounded Pune on Saturday, transforming the city’s Hinjewadi IT Park into something right out of a water park. Sustained rain flooded the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park complex, with roads submerged and traffic near a halt. Commuters were stuck with delayed journeys as cars formed long queues, trying to navigate through the soaked roads.

A since-viral video records the intensity of the situation, a flooded public bus, almost under water, is observed to slow through the flooded area, making waves as it goes. Another air-conditioned Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) bus was also stuck in the flood, partially underwater.

Poor Drainage System, Old Infrastructure

Hinjewadi’s Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, which houses approximately 400 IT and IT-enabled service firms, continues to battle poor drainage systems and aging infrastructure. The ongoing metro development and roadwork have further complicated matters, as they block the natural flow of rainwater cascading from surrounding hills, worsening the flooding problem during monsoons.

Pune was showered with more than 150 mm of rain on Saturday alone, triggering the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘yellow’ alert of heavy rain on Sunday too.

Supriya Sule Calls Out Authorities

NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule posted on social media to bring notice to the waterlogging situation, especially around Ryan International School in Hinjewadi Phase 2. She posted a video clip indicating the level of flooding and expressed concern regarding the drainage management of the area.

“A lot of water has collected due to heavy rain around Ryan International School and numerous other locations in the Hinjewadi Phase 2 region. It is unclear if there is any drainage system to clear water here,” Sule posted on X.

She also demanded that the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) step in at the earliest and begin permanent measures.

Such works as draining the pipelines here must be carried out in time. But such works do not appear to be carried out in time. MIDC must give immediate attention to this issue and adopt long-term strategies to avoid water clogging here in the future and cause inconvenience to the citizens,” she added.

With infrastructure lagging behind development and rainfall intensity, residents and governments are stuck with seasonal urban flooding that does not seem to ease.
