Probe uncovers teen’s naked escape attempt, room-to-room fleeing

The demise of a 17-year-old student from Jadavpur University in Kolkata has ignited a fierce debate about ragging within academic institutions. Police investigations into the incident have unveiled shocking details: the first-year undergraduate was allegedly stripped and paraded naked within the campus hostel. The unfortunate incident occurred on August 9 when the student tragically fell from the second-floor of the main hostel building.
The grieving family asserts that their child suffered both ragging and sexual harassment during his time at the hostel. To date, police have made 13 arrests in connection with the case and have been extensively questioning residents and staff members of the hostel.
As per police sources, the student was subjected to an hour-long ragging ordeal that involved him being paraded in a humiliating manner. Fleeing from one room to another in an attempt to escape the bullying, the victim also faced derogatory remarks of a sexual nature.
Evidence against at least 12 of the 13 arrested suspects has been reportedly gathered by the police. Authorities are contemplating the application of the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act in the case.
The tragic incident at the esteemed institution has reignited the ongoing discourse surrounding ragging on campuses, shedding light on the efficacy of existing rules in combating this deeply rooted issue.
This event has further fuelled a political controversy. The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of negligence. In response, the Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, has shifted blame onto Governor CV Ananda Bose, holding him “100 per cent responsible” for the situation at the university.
Governor Bose, as the University Chancellor vested with the power to make top appointments, convened an emergency meeting at Raj Bhavan to assess the progress of the investigation.
