On Monday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called on the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal to take decisive action and ensure justice in the case of a woman doctor’s alleged rape and murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The body of the postgraduate trainee, who was reportedly raped and murdered in a seminar hall at the hospital, was discovered on Friday morning. A civic volunteer was arrested on Saturday in connection with the crime.
Junior doctors have been protesting for the fourth consecutive day, demanding swift punishment for those responsible, which has disrupted services in government hospitals across West Bengal.
In a Hindi post on X, Priyanka Gandhi remarked, “The incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College is heartbreaking.” She emphasized that women’s safety in the workplace is a significant issue in the country and stressed the need for concrete measures.
“I appeal to the state government to take immediate and strict action in this case and ensure justice to the victim’s family and fellow doctors,” Priyanka Gandhi added.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated on Monday that her government would transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the police could not resolve the case by Sunday. She also expressed a desire for the case to be expedited in a fast-track court.
In response to the backlash over the incident at the state-run hospital, Principal Sandip Ghosh resigned from his position and government service on Monday, following demands from junior doctors for his removal due to inadequate security for staff.
