President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday accorded her approval to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025, officially giving it legislative backing to enact it as a law. The Presidential seal marked the legislative finishing point of the bill that had attracted quite extensive deliberation within the Houses of Parliament throughout the previous week.
Parliament Passes Bill Amid Heated Deliberations
The Lok Sabha approved the bill in the early hours of Thursday morning after hours of debate, and the Rajya Sabha approved it one day later, on Friday. The Upper House saw a heated 17-hour-long session running past midnight as members discussed the Waqf Amendment Bill provisions and its effects.
Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill Also Approved
Within the same prolonged Rajya Sabha session, the House further cleared the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024. This was following its prior passing in the Lok Sabha, paving the way for the eradication of the relic legislation.
The government moved both bills ahead as part of its wider Waqf properties and governance-related reforms. While the move was received with open arms by supporters as a move toward legal clarification and transparency, critics were concerned about how it would affect minority rights.
With President Murmu’s signing, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 is now law, ending a contentious legislative process.
