Police faces resistance from advocates during raid on accused SHO, constables in bribery case

A Moga police team encountered strong resistance from several advocates when it conducted a raid at the homes of SHO Arshpreet Kaur Grewal and her two subordinate constables involved in an alleged bribery case. Led by a DSP, the police team faced opposition from advocates, including the SHO’s husband, himself an advocate, who insisted the search be conducted in their presence. The police clarified that the search was conducted under court orders and recorded on camera.
Sunil Garg, president of the District Bar Council, stated that advocates asked the police to avoid harassing the SHO’s family during the search.
The Moga police had recently registered a corruption case under the Corruption and NDPS Acts against SHO Grewal and constables Gurpreet Singh and Raj Pal Singh. The trio allegedly accepted an Rs 8 lakh bribe from two individuals in an opium smuggling case, releasing them and returning the seized drugs.

Following the bribery case registration, SHO Grewal made counter-allegations against senior officers, including accusations of sexual harassment and claims that she was pressured to clear four suspects in a murder case. The police refuted these allegations, with Moga SP (H) Gursharanjit Singh Sandhu, chairman of the Local Complaints Committee, stating that the SHO had neither filed verbal nor written complaints on the matter.
In the bribery case, it is alleged that the SHO and her team seized 5 kg of opium from three individuals on October 1 but later accepted Rs 8 lakh to name only one accused, Amarjit Singh, and report a reduced seizure of 2 kg. The incident came to light after district officers initiated a probe, said BK Singla, SP (D), Moga.
With the accused officers now absconding, they have been suspended as the investigation continues.
