The Prime Minister's Office (PMO), currently located in the historic South Block, is set to shift to the new Executive Enclave next month. Government sources confirmed that the new complex, built under the ambitious Central Vista project, is ready to host the country’s top administrative offices.
Modern infrastructure has been incorporated into the Executive Enclave to replace the antiquated amenities found in colonial-era structures. The Cabinet Secretariat, the National Security Council Secretariat, the PMO, and a sizable conference centre will all be housed there.
The new PMO will also be closer to the Prime Minister’s residence, ensuring improved efficiency in day-to-day governance.
Space limitations and unfavourable working conditions in historic buildings, according to officials, made the relocation necessary. After almost 80 years of operation, the South Block and North Block were discovered to be devoid of contemporary conveniences, with insufficient office space, lighting, and ventilation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had highlighted these issues earlier, saying that key ministries, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, functioned for nearly 100 years from spaces that were inadequate for their responsibilities.
The relocation is part of a larger revamp of India’s administrative heart. Earlier this month, the Prime Minister inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan-3, where the Ministries of Home Affairs and Personnel have already shifted.
During the inauguration, PM Modi remarked that India’s governance structure should reflect its stature as an emerging global economic power. The construction of modern office spaces, he said, aligns with the vision of a “New India.”
Sources also indicated that the PMO could be given a new name, in line with the government’s practice of renaming all Central Vista projects. Reports suggest the new name could embody the spirit of sewa (service).

In his first address to the PMO after assuming office for the third term, PM Modi had stressed that the Prime Minister’s Office should serve the people. “The PMO should be ‘people’s PMO’. It cannot be Modi’s PMO,” he had said.
With the shift of key ministries to new facilities, the iconic North Block and South Block will be repurposed into a grand public museum. The project, named ‘Yuge Yugeen Bharat Sangrahalaya’, is being developed in collaboration with the French Museums Development and the National Museum.
According to the government, the museum will showcase India’s cultural heritage. “This project (is) aimed at showcasing India's cultural heritage - a celebration of timeless & eternal India to explore our proud past, illuminate the present & imagine the bright future,” the statement read.
The new PMO, along with the revamped Central Vista, is seen as a reflection of India’s progress. With modern infrastructure, improved efficiency, and a focus on service, the upcoming Executive Enclave marks a new chapter in the country’s governance.
