Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a day-long visit to Bihar and West Bengal, where he will unveil and launch development projects totaling more than ₹18,000 crore  that is ₹13,000 crore in Bihar and ₹5,200 crore in Bengal.

Key Highlights of Bihar Visit

  • Gaya Leg: The Prime Minister will spend around four hours covering Gaya, Patna, and Begusarai. At Gaya, he will inaugurate the 660 MW Buxar Thermal Power Plant, built at a cost of ₹6,880 crore. He will also open the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Muzaffarpur, aimed at boosting cancer treatment facilities in north Bihar.

  • Infrastructure Projects: In Munger, Mr. Modi will inaugurate a ₹520 crore sewage treatment plant under the Namami Gange initiative. Alongside, he will dedicate urban infrastructure projects worth about ₹1,260 crore spread across the state.

  • Rail Initiatives: Two trains will be flagged off from Gaya — the Amrit Bharat Express connecting Gaya to Delhi and a Buddhist Circuit special train linking Vaishali in Bihar with Koderma in Jharkhand.

  • Housing Scheme: Symbolic keys will be handed over to 12,000 beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), which provides affordable housing for rural families.

Focus on West Bengal

Later in the evening, the Prime Minister will arrive in Kolkata to launch a package of transport and infrastructure projects worth nearly ₹5,200 crore, marking a significant push for urban mobility in the state.

Metro Expansions: At 4:15 pm, Mr. Modi will flag off three new metro stretches covering a combined length of 13.62 km. These include the Sealdah–Esplanade corridor (2.45 km), a key stretch that will link one of the busiest suburban railway hubs to central Kolkata; the Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar line (6.77 km), designed to provide faster access to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport; and the Hemanta Mukhopadhyay–Beleghata line (4.39 km), which will extend connectivity in the city’s eastern parts. Once operational, these lines are expected to ease congestion, shorten travel time, and benefit lakhs of commuters daily.

Expressway Project: In addition, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a 7.2 km elevated corridor on the Kona Expressway, estimated at over ₹1,200 crore. The corridor is expected to decongest one of the busiest entry points into Kolkata by streamlining vehicular movement between Howrah and the city. This stretch, part of the Golden Quadrilateral network, is a crucial link for long-distance traffic from Delhi and Mumbai heading towards Kolkata and the Haldia port.

Together, these projects underline the Centre’s focus on strengthening Bengal’s transport backbone, while also boosting trade and connectivity in one of India’s most densely populated urban regions.
