PM Modi Highlights India’s Ambitions in Semiconductor Production on I-Day

In his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in semiconductor production. He stated, “Semiconductors, modern technologies, and Artificial Intelligence are crucial to our future, and we have embarked on the Indian Semiconductor Mission.”

PM Modi questioned why every piece of equipment couldn’t feature a ‘Made in India’ chip, asserting that India has the potential to make this vision a reality. He underscored that semiconductor production and related activities will take place in India, adding, “We have started our Semiconductor Mission, and we are progressing rapidly with 5G and boosting our production capacity. I assure you, we will not stop here.”

Earlier this year, in March, PM Modi laid the foundation stones for three new semiconductor plants—two in Gujarat and one in Assam. Tata Group will establish two of these plants. The plants were approved by the Union Cabinet under the ‘Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India’ initiative.

The semiconductor facilities will be located in Dholera and Sanand in Gujarat, and Morigaon in Assam. Notably, the Morigaon unit will be the Northeast’s first semiconductor plant, with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore. This facility is expected to produce chips for major global automotive companies.

In Dholera, Gujarat, Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) is collaborating with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC) to develop a Rs 91,000 crore facility. This plant will focus on high-performance computer chips using 28 nm technology, serving various sectors including electric vehicles (EVs), telecommunications, defense, automotive, consumer electronics, and power electronics.

Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) is also setting up a manufacturing unit in Morigaon, Assam, with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore. This facility will cater to sectors such as automotive, EVs, consumer electronics, telecommunications, and mobile phones.

On Wednesday, PM Modi met with Young Liu, Chairman of Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), to discuss opportunities in advanced sectors. Foxconn, a leading global electronics manufacturer, is expanding its investments in India, including plans to double its workforce. Last year, Foxconn announced a Rs 5,000 crore investment in Karnataka through two projects.
