Onions At Rs 80 Per Kg In Delhi And Mumbai: What’s Behind the Steep Price Hike?

Onions, an essential part of Indian cuisine, are making citizens teary-eyed as their prices soar across markets in several cities. Wholesale prices have surged from ₹40-60 per kilogram to ₹70-80 per kilogram in just a matter of days, leading to distress among consumers. The price hike, which has particularly impacted Delhi and Mumbai, is putting a strain on household budgets, with many consumers voicing their concerns over the rising cost of this staple vegetable.

Market Vendors and Buyers Speak Out

In Delhi, a market vendor explained the situation to ANI, stating that the price of onions had increased from ₹60 to ₹70 per kilogram. He noted that the prices at the mandis directly influence the prices at retail markets. While sales have reduced due to the price hike, vendors mentioned that consumers still continue purchasing onions, as they remain an integral part of daily meals.

One buyer, Faiza, expressed her distress over the soaring prices, stating, “The price of onions has shot up even though it should have come down according to the season. It has affected food-eating habits in the household. I appeal to the government to at least reduce the prices of vegetables that are consumed daily.”

Rising Prices in Other Cities

The situation is similar in Mumbai, where onion prices have also skyrocketed. Dr. Khan, a Mumbai resident, shared his concern, saying, “The price of onions and garlic has gone up manifold. This has doubled the costs for households, which is affecting our budget.” Another buyer, Aakash, also expressed frustration, noting, “Just like the Sensex, onion prices will go up and down, but for now, the price is high.”

Inflation and Supply Chain Disruptions Blamed for the Increase

According to market experts, the rising prices are largely attributed to inflation, as well as supply chain disruptions. Kishore, a seller in the market, mentioned that the price hike, which has seen onions rise from ₹60 to ₹75 per kilogram, is a direct result of the current inflationary pressures. Despite the increase, consumers continue to buy onions as they are a staple ingredient in most Indian kitchens.

As of November 8, 2024, the price of onions in Delhi stands at approximately ₹80 per kilogram, creating a ripple effect in other parts of the country as well. While the price surge has caused frustration among buyers, many hope for a decrease in the coming months, as with other commodity price fluctuations.
