Omar Abdullah Lauds PM Modi’s Efforts, Expresses Confidence in Restoration of J&K’s Statehood

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts to bridge the “dil ki duri” (distance between hearts) and “Delhi se duri” (distance from Delhi) while expressing hope that the promise of statehood restoration would soon be fulfilled. Abdullah’s remarks came during a public gathering after the inauguration of the 6.5-km Z-Morh tunnel, renamed the ‘Sonamarg Tunnel,’ in Ganderbal district. The project, built at a cost of ₹2,700 crore, ensures all-weather connectivity to Sonamarg and is seen as a critical boost for regional development.

Beginning his address, Abdullah paid homage to the seven individuals who lost their lives in a terrorist attack near the tunnel site on October 20 last year. “Their sacrifices paved the way for this project and the larger development of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, reiterating the government’s resolve to defeat terrorism and uphold peace, democracy, and progress in the region.

Acknowledging Modi’s Leadership and Promises Fulfilled

Highlighting Modi’s commitment, Abdullah said, “When you visited Srinagar after securing a third term, your words about bridging emotional and political distances resonated deeply. Through your actions, including holding assembly elections, you’ve proven the sincerity of those commitments.” He commended the transparent and fair conduct of the recent elections, stating, “There were no allegations of rigging or misuse of official machinery—a testament to your leadership, your team, and the Election Commission.”

Referring to Modi’s International Yoga Day address last year, Abdullah voiced optimism about the restoration of statehood. “My heart says you will soon fulfill your third promise to the people of Jammu and Kashmir—restoring its statehood,” he said, drawing applause from the audience.

Infrastructure Development as a Pathway to Unity

Abdullah emphasized the transformative potential of the Sonamarg Tunnel, calling it a bridge between the hearts of Kashmir and Delhi. “This project signifies much more than connectivity—it embodies hope, unity, and a shared commitment to development,” he remarked. The tunnel, located at an altitude of 8,650 feet above sea level, features a two-lane bi-directional road and a parallel 7.5-meter-wide emergency escape passage. It bypasses landslide and avalanche-prone areas, ensuring year-round access between Srinagar and Sonamarg, and facilitating progress on the under-construction Zojila Tunnel to Ladakh.

A Vision for Peace and Prosperity

Abdullah underscored the resilience of Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape, highlighting the sacrifices of thousands of leaders and workers over 35 years in the fight against separatism. “Those opposing development and peace will continue to face defeat,” he declared. Thanking Modi for braving the cold weather to visit Kashmir, Abdullah expressed hope for continued engagement. “We look forward to your presence in future milestones, celebrating our shared progress,” he said.

The inauguration of the Sonamarg Tunnel, Abdullah concluded, marks a pivotal moment in Jammu and Kashmir’s journey toward peace, prosperity, and integration, paving the way for tourism and socio-economic growth in the region.
