Cataclysmic rains over the past three days have wreaked havoc in the form of floods, landslides, and flash floods in the northeastern part of India, taking over 22 lives and leaving thousands homeless. The most affected states—Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh—are experiencing devastated infrastructure, jammed roads, and large-scale evacuations.
Rescue efforts are being continued, but scattered rain continues to hinder operations, with multiple individuals suspected trapped in inaccessible or inundated areas.
IMD Issues Warning of More Rains
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rains in the next few days in the Northeast. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to affect most areas, further worsening the already precarious flood situation.
State-Wise Impact Overview
Assam: Eight Dead, 17 Districts Submerged
Assam has lost eight lives due to flooding, with five belonging to Kamrup Metro from landslides. PTI reports that more than 78,000 people have been impacted in 17 districts. Guwahati is experiencing unprecedented waterlogging on the second consecutive day, necessitating rescue forces to evacuate its people.
Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya rainwater has aggravated the situation, and Lakhimpur is the worst-affected district with more than 41,600 persons affected. Relief work involves functional camps and assistance from several agencies.
Mizoram: Five killed in landslides, refugees among them
Mizoram is witnessing heavy rain, which has caused 147 landslide accidents, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including three Myanmar refugees. PTI reports that 56 houses have suffered damages and highways have been blocked at 69 points. Sixty-three families were shifted to safer areas. The roads are still blocked with landslides in Serchhip for tourists.
Meghalaya: Lightning and Floods Claim Six Lives
Meghalaya has registered six fatalities, comprising two girls who were hit by lightning and one drowning victim. Landslides and flash flooding affected life in 49 villages involving about 1,100 persons. Emergency operations are ongoing, and the government might deploy paramilitary troops for rescue operations. Search and rescue operations for a missing couple from Madhya Pradesh are held up due to rain and poor visibility.
Arunachal Pradesh: 9 Die in Landslides, CM Calls for Caution
Arunachal Pradesh landslides claimed nine lives—seven in East Kameng and two in Ziro Valley. Chief Minister Pema Khandu condoled the deaths and sanctioned ₹4 lakh ex-gratia for every grieving family.
With June 1-6 predicted to see more rain, the CM advised people to not take unnecessary journeys and keep away from rivers and streams. “The majority of water bodies in the state are full to the brim,” he cautioned.
Manipur: Flooding Disrupts Life in Imphal
Imphal, the capital of Manipur, is facing flood-like situations because of relentless rain. Roads are knee-deep in water, leading to major traffic jams. Residents took emergency measures to safeguard homes and stores as poorly maintained drainage systems were unable to cope with the rain.
Relief Measures and Warnings
All the states hit by the disaster have stepped up relief and rescue efforts, deploying NDRF and state disaster response forces. With rain continuing to pound the area, officials advise citizens to stay indoors, not take water-logged routes, and stay informed through official messages.
