Nigeria to Honour PM Modi with Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be conferred with Nigeria’s prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) during his visit to the country, becoming only the second foreign dignitary to receive this honor. The first was Queen Elizabeth II, who was awarded the title in 1969.
This recognition marks the 17th international award bestowed upon PM Modi by a foreign nation, reflecting his significant contributions to fostering global partnerships.
– Warm Reception in Abuja: Upon his arrival in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, PM Modi was welcomed by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, Minister for Federal Capital Territory. Wike also presented Modi with the ‘Key to the City’, symbolizing trust and respect from the people of Nigeria.
– Strengthening Strategic Partnership: PM Modi’s visit follows an invitation from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and aims to bolster the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria.
– Focus Areas: Discussions will center on enhancing cooperation in economic development, energy, defense, and capacity building, alongside a review of the existing bilateral strategic framework established in 2007.
– Economic Ties: India is Nigeria’s significant development partner, with over 200 Indian companies investing more than USD 27 billion in key sectors of the Nigerian economy.
This visit is notable as it marks the **first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years. PM Modi emphasized the importance of the partnership, saying:
> “This visit will build upon our shared belief in democracy and pluralism. I also look forward to engaging with the vibrant Indian community and Nigerian friends who have sent warm welcome messages in Hindi.”
PM Modi’s trip to Nigeria is part of a three-nation tour spanning November 17 to November 21, with subsequent stops in Brazil and Guyana. This tour underscores India’s growing role in global diplomacy and its commitment to strengthening ties with key partners in West Africa, South America, and the Caribbean.
