NIA Conducts Raids in Punjab Over 2023 Grenade Attack at Indian High Commission in Canada

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) launched a series of raids across Punjab on Friday, focusing on a March 2023 grenade attack by pro-Khalistani supporters at the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, Canada. The raids are part of an ongoing investigation into the violent protest where demonstrators tied Khalistani flags to the High Commission’s boundary and hurled two grenades inside the premises, leading to a significant diplomatic concern.

Raids Across Punjab Districts

NIA officials conducted the raids in key districts, including Moga, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Jalandhar, as part of the case registered under RC-17/2023/NIA/DLI. The operation aims to uncover further details about the individuals involved in the attack, which was reportedly led by Amarjot Singh, the brother-in-law of the jailed Waris Punjab De chief, Amritpal Singh.

Key Details of the Incident

According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed in June 2023, pro-Khalistani supporters staged a protest at the Indian High Commission in Ottawa on March 23, 2023. The protestors raised anti-India slogans, affixed Khalistani flags, and later hurled two grenades into the High Commission premises. The NIA identified Amarjot Singh as the leader of the mob, with several unidentified individuals also taking part in the attack.

Ongoing Investigations
This case, initially registered by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell on June 8, 2023, has since been handed over to the NIA for further investigation. Amarjot Singh, along with other key individuals, is being closely scrutinized by authorities for unlawful activities linked to the grenade attack and pro-Khalistani propaganda.

The raids reflect India’s broader effort to crack down on separatist movements and safeguard its diplomatic missions from external threats.
