The recently disclosed will of Ratan Tata has stunned many. As per reports he left a third of his residual assets, valued at over ₹500 crore, to an unexpected beneficiary. Surprisingly, very few people knew about this association.
A Shocking Beneficiary
The chosen recipient is Mohini Mohan Dutta, a travel industry entrepreneur from Jamshedpur. His inclusion in the will has taken the Tata family and close associates by surprise. According to multiple sources, no one anticipated this decision.
Who is Mohini Mohan Dutta?
Dutta’s connection with Ratan Tata was not widely known. However, those familiar with his life say he had been a trusted associate for years. His family previously owned Stallion, a travel agency that merged with Taj Services in 2013. Notably, Taj Services is part of the Taj Group of Hotels.
Before the merger, Dutta and his family controlled 80% of Stallion, while Tata Industries held the remaining stake. Additionally, he served as a director at TC Travel Services, which was once affiliated with Thomas Cook.
A Friendship Spanning Six Decades
Over the years, Dutta openly spoke about his deep bond with the Tata family. At Ratan Tata’s funeral in October 2024, he revealed details of their long-standing association. He stated, “We first met in Jamshedpur at the Dealers’ Hostel when he was 24. He helped me out and really built me up.”
Moreover, in December 2024, Dutta attended Ratan Tata’s birth anniversary celebration at NCPA in Mumbai. The event included close associates and family members.
A Strong Commitment to Philanthropy
As expected, Ratan Tata dedicated the majority of his wealth to charitable causes. His half-sisters, who were also named as beneficiaries, are reportedly considering donating their share as well.
To ensure his legacy continues, Tata established two philanthropic entities—the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust. These organizations will oversee a significant portion of his assets and support various charitable initiatives.
A Legacy That Endures
Undoubtedly, Ratan Tata remains one of India’s most respected business leaders. He passed away in October 2024 at the age of 86. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded tremendously, generating over $100 billion in annual revenue.
His will reflects not only his business acumen but also his deep commitment to giving back to society.
