The festival is a four-day affair centred on utmost purity, austerity, and dedication to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya:
Day 1 (Nahay-Khay): The faithful take a ritual bath, usually in the Ganga river, and eat one single, strictly vegetarian meal.
Day 2 (Kharna): It is a fast from sunrise to sunset, broken only after offering and eating a special meal of kheer (rice pudding) prepared using jaggery.
Day 3 (Sandhya Arghya): A 36-hour, waterless fast starts. Families go to a riverbank or water body to provide the evening arghya to the western sun.
Day 4 (Usha Arghya & Parana): The last morning offering is provided to the eastern rising sun, ending the principal rituals.
The central ritual is to stand in water (waist-deep) and provide prayers and the arghya.
Paran (or Parana) is breaking the 36-hour fast. It is the last ritual that marks the end of the Chhath Mahaparva.
The Paran takes place right after the Usha Arghya (Morning Offering).
